Wind Power increases Opportunities

Welcome to our renewable energy month! While we always focus on all things renewable and energy diversification-related, ReNew Mexico wants to take this week’s blog to showcase why wind energy brings many opportunities to New Mexico.  New Mexico is the 12th windiest state (You should see the tumble weed that flew into my neighborhood). There are some places in New Mexico, like Union County and Tucumcari, that get wind all year around.

New Mexico has been long looked at as being one of the top contributors of alternative forms of energy – including wind. This could not only boost our statewide economy, but local ones as well. We did a segment on Curry County last year, if you want to check it out. Wind can play an integral part of economic recovery and sustainability.

Energy project development mainly impacts rural economies, as they get the most direct and indirect benefits. This is especially true for wind development considering 99% of America’s wind capacity is in rural areas! Urban areas like Albuquerque benefit as well with diversifying the grid energy sources with renewable energy by removing the dependency on residential programs. This makes renewable energy accessible to all socioeconomic backgrounds and removes the need for landlords to be incentivized.

Wind can be one of the major factors in bringing economic justice and energy accessibility to a wider audience. New Mexico needs to bring wind energy to diversify our energy and bring social justice into the energy world. Wind is a part of the solution and we should bring all efforts to the forefront of the climate crisis.
