New Project Alert: Sandia Peak Grid Battery Storage Project

ReNew Mexico is proud to support The Sandia Peak Grid Battery Storage Project.

Something that never fails to excite our team at ReNew Mexico is learning all the ways renewable energy technologies keep expanding and improving to fit our needs. One such project we are looking forward to is a battery storage facility in Albuquerque!

The Sandia Peak Grid Battery is a 100 MW battery storage project to be built across from the Reeves Generating Station. Not only will this technology provide reliable baseload power to our grid, but it also greatly complements current and future solar and wind projects by bringing the energy to a place where it can be held and distributed as needed.

This is an exciting prospect when we look toward reaching our energy standards at both the city and state levels, but even better is the economic boost the surrounding communities will see! It is estimated to bring in $6.7 million in tax revenue over 20 years, which is something that could help with funding our schools or perhaps completing some existing road constructions (looking at you Paseo!).

Integrating more battery storage onto our grid system is an important way to make sure we have the energy needed to keep our coolers and ACs running during the summer and our heaters during intense snowstorms. As we start expecting more instances of extreme weather events, using reliable, clean energy is increasingly becoming a matter of public health, especially using technology that doesn’t strain our limited resources like water consumption.

As we keep working toward improving our larger energy infrastructure and bringing forth more utility-scale solar, wind, and renewable transmission technologies, it’s important to start building easier projects in the meantime that can easily be incorporated into urban and rural settings with very little disturbance. Battery storage like the Sandia Peak Grid project is one such technology. Please let us know if you’d like to support this project – reach out to us today at info@renewmexico.org to get involved.
